Dr Kate Duffy-Syedi
Kate has worked with refugee young people in London since 2012. Between 2014-18 she managed youth and housing projects for Paiwand, a grassroots Afghan refugee charity, and worked predominantly with unaccompanied minor young men. She was also part of the founding team of Springboard Youth Academy, a trauma-informed education charity for refugee youth in London, and sat on its advisory board between 2017-22.
As well as being in Phosphoros Theatre’s senior leadership team, where she heads up Community Engagement, Kate is a researcher and educator. She completed her practice research PhD at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (funded by LAHP, AHRC), and frequently collaborates with Phosphoros as part of her research into refugee performance and care. She is also Visiting Lecturer at Central where she focusses on Applied and Community Theatre, often with a migration angle. Kate is currently a postdoctoral researcher on the Credible Witnesses project at Central, exploring young people’s experiences of testimonial injustice.
Kate studied BA Drama, Applied Theatre and Education at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, and MA Migration and Diaspora Studies at SOAS.
